U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell wants to stop the Environmental Protection Agency from what he calls “a back-door national energy tax.”
McConnell filed an amendment to a pending small business bill that would stop the EPA from imposing new regulations on carbon emissions.
The Kentucky Senator charged the regulations would lead to high prices for gasoline, groceries, electricity and natural gas while stalling economic and job growth.
McConnell says the regulations would destroy jobs, especially in coal states like Kentucky.
His amendment is identical to a bill sponsored by Republican Representatives Ed Whitfield of Kentucky and Fred Upton of Michigan. The legislation is pending in the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
