U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell kicked off the 2014 campaign today with the release of its first Internet video ad.  The campaign calls the ad a “parody,” that pokes fun at Democrats trying to find someone to run against the Senate Minority Leader.

The video, “Obama’s Kentucky Candidate”, is on the newly launched website www.obamaskentuckycandidate.com

McConnell’s Campaign Manager, Jessie Benton, issued this statement in a fundraising email to supporters.

“We all know that President Barack Obama has made Senator McConnell his number one target this cycle. Their problem is, it doesn't seem like Kentucky Democrats got his memo.

The Press may swoon at the idea of a competitive race, but the fact remains that Democrats are having a tough time passing the laugh test in their recruiting.

Our campaign decided to have some fun with this process in a parody video.  Please watch our very first media buy of the cycle, "Obama's Kentucky Candidate."

The ad features Ed Marksberry, a perennial candidate who was the first to throw his hat into the ring against McConnell, actress Ashley Judd, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, former State Auditor Critt Luallen, Congressman John Yarmuth, Gov. Steve Beshear, Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson, and Attorney General Jack Conway.

Kentucky Democratic Party Chairman Daniel Logsdon told the Lexington Herald Leader the video shows McConnell doesn’t want to talk about his long voting record in Washington.

“The only thing he can do is make fun of serious people who are trying to help Kentuckians.” We “will have a strong challenger in 2014.”

The Hill, a congressional newspaper in Washington, D.C. is reporting McConnell could also face a primary challenge from Tea Party candidate Matt Bevin.

Tea Party activist and former Rand Paul campaign manager, David Adams, told the Lexington Herald Leader the state “may have multiple candidates to run against McConnell.”
