Obama flag flap: “Virtual flag desecration” or “Political art”?

President Obama campaign flag causes wave of controversy.

Last week President Obama’s reelection campaign started selling copies of an American flag poster that replaced the flag’s 50 stars with the president’s well-known campaign logo.

The poster, Our Stripes: Flag Print, sold for $35 each on www.BarackObama.com

The flag immediately made waves among conservatives and online critics, many calling the posters “un-American”, “shameful”, “disrespectful”, “offensive”, and “tasteless.” One conservative blogger called it “virtual flag desecration.”

On Wednesday, the President’s campaign tweeted an explanation.

The poster no longer appears in the campaign’s online store. The poster was advertised as a limited edition of 250.  Instead of the typical “out of stock” message, an error message comes up when you click the previous link to purchase the flag.

Some have questioned whether the flag violated the U.S. Flag Code.

Here are some excerpts from the flag code.

“The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.”

“The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever.”

However, some experts in American flag etiquette say the Obama flag is not a violation of the U.S. Flag Code. Click here to read the U.S. Flag Code

In an interview with Todd Starnes, the host of Fox News and Commentary, a spokesman for the American Legion called it “political art.”  Click here to read the article.

This isn’t the first time a U.S. flag was used in a Presidential campaign.

Here is an interesting debate on the issue from Fox News.

This is also the topic of our web poll.  You can vote until four Wednesday afternoon.  Here are the resutls as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.  Vote at www.wymtnews.com
