President Barack Obama says a humanitarian catastrophe has been avoided in Libya.

One week after U.S.-led air and missile strikes began against Moammar Gadhafi's forces, the President used his weekly media address to outline the progress.  It is a warm-up for a Monday speech to explain his Libya policy.

He says Libya's air defenses have been "taken out" and forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi have been pushed back from cities where the people have risen up against him.

He says the mission is succeeding.
