Will the world end today?

I’m sure by now you’ve heard the prediction that the world will end on Saturday, May 21 at 6pm.

I’m sure by now you’ve heard the prediction that the world will end on Saturday, May 21 at 6pm.

This isn’t the first time Harold Camping has made such a prediction.  His first prediction for September 1994 was obviously false, just as this latest prediction will prove to be.

Don’t get me wrong, as Christians we believe in the Second Coming.  We believe Jesus will return to rapture His faithful into Heaven. He will return to judge the living and the dead.  And many Christians, contrary to some national reports, believe that we are living in the end times.

However, trying to pick a date for Christ’s return based on hidden codes and mathematical formulas is not only dangerous but also contrary to what Jesus told us.

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Matthew 24-42,44

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.” Mark 13:32-33

The public, Christian and non-Christian alike, has always been fascinated by the concept of a final judgment day.  Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins'  "Left Behind" books have sold more 65 million copies. It remains one of the best-selling fiction series in print today.

Focus on the Family President Jim Daly has a great article about this “end of the world” prediction. I want to share it with you.

Does all of this talk about the end of the world make you a little uneasy?  I’d like to hear your thoughts.

I guess I like how Tim LaHaye summed it up best.

He said, “You can be sure the rapture will not occur when anyone sets a date because God wants us all to live every day as though Christ could come today. A great motto for daily living is PERHAPS TODAY. For one day it will happen and we don't know when, but we don't want you to be left behind!”

We don’t have to be worried about death or when the world will end.  God offered us eternal life through His Son Jesus.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

I look forward to hearing from you.
