Previewing the Good, Bad and Ugly of Playing for Keeps and the Intouchables

It’s another short week for movie releases this week.  Only one film is releasing wide while another is coming to Lexington for the first time.  (It’s not Silver Linings Playbook.  Sorry, sister.)  Let’s get it started.  First on the field of play is…

A former sports star who's fallen on hard times starts coaching his son's soccer team as a way to get his life together. His attempts to become an adult are met with challenges from the attractive soccer moms who pursue him at every turn. *

The Good – Jessica Biel is not bad to look at.  It’s also nice that soccer is getting some mainstream love.

The Bad – This is a December release?  This film should be firmly placed in the late January, early February time slot.  It looks like a clichéd mess of a film.  The trailer alone makes me believe that this movie does not have an original idea throughout its running time.

The Ugly – Not only is this a December release, it’s also the only major release this week.  I guess Twilight will have the #1 spot for one more week.

Playing For Keeps is rated PG-13 for some sexual situations, language and a brief intense image.

After he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, an aristocrat hires a young man from the projects to be his caretaker. *

The Good – This is France’s entry for Best Foreign film at the 2013 Academy Awards.  It is also France’s second most successful production and it achieved that ranking after only 9 weeks.  Rotten Tomatoes has it sitting pretty at 76% out of 116 reviews.  Its IMDB user rating has it ranked 65 in their top 250.  This film looks and sounds like a great crowd pleaser that has won accolades wherever it has gone.

The Bad – This movie was released in limited theaters back in May and we are only now getting it in Lexington.  I have never been a fan of a prolonged limited release schedule.  Any hype a film might have will have been squandered by the time it reaches the Kentucky Theater.

The Ugly – The fact that this movie will not get the love from America because it has subtitles.

The Intouchables is rated R for language and some drug use.

That will do for this week.  Stay tuned next time when we take an unexpected journey through New Zealand.  Until then, I’m going to keep bending it like Beckham.
