The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Lawless, The Possession, The Oogieloves and Celeste & Jesse Forever

I’ve got nothing really to say in this portion so let’s just go right to the New Releases for this week. Up first we have…

LAWLESS

Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a bootlegging gang is threatened by a new deputy and other authorities who want a cut of their profits. *

The Good – The actors have come out for this prohibition tale of corruption. The main stars are Shia LaBeouf (Monkey Business) and, fresh from taking on the Dark Knight, Tom Hardy (Dot the I). Tagging along are the likes of Guy Pearce (Friday on my Mind), Gary Oldman (Remembrance), Jason Clarke (Twilight…not that one), Jessica Chastain (Stolen) and Ricky Muse (My Fake Fiancé). The movie looks good and with that cast, I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

The Bad – I’ve only seen one of Director John Hilcoat’s (The Road) films but that one (The Proposition) was kind of boring. It was a western starring Guy Pearce that put me to sleep. I had heard rave reviews about it but came away under impressed. I’ve been meaning to check out The Road but am waiting on reading the novel first (it is currently in a stack of to do things that currently reaches to my ceiling and back to the floor again).

The Ugly – It looks like a 1930’s version of The Dukes of Hazzard. If good old Waylon Jennings kicks up during the credits, I would not be surprised.

Lawless is rated R for strong bloody violence, language and some sexuality/nudity.

THE POSSESSION

A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl's father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child. *

The Good – Director Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Darkman) is one of the producers behind the film. When his name is attached, I usually take notice as his directorial efforts are some of my favorite films.

The Bad – Of course his name means bupkis when he only produces. Everything I said about The Apparition last week equally applies here. This looks like another PG-13 snooze fest. It lacks the inventiveness of his directorial efforts and appears to be retreading The Grudge, another film he produced that I still question why I paid good money to see in theaters. This is a film I will gladly pass on.

The Ugly – The claim that this is based on a true story. There is a legend of a haunted box that is the basis of this story that stretches the line of believability to the point of breaking.

The Possession is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving violence and disturbing sequences.

THE OOGIELOVES IN THE BIG BALLOON ADVENTURE

The Oogieloves -- Goobie, Zoozie and Toofie -- set out to find five magical balloons that will make their good friend Schluufy's surprise birthday party extra-special. *

The Good – WHAT

The Bad – THE

The Ugly – HECK!!!

The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure is rated G.

CELESTE & JESSE FOREVER

A divorcing couple tries to maintain their friendship while they both pursue other people. *

The Good – I usually like it when comedians step out of their comfort zones. It has worked for Will Farrell (Stranger than Fiction), Steve Carell (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) and Jim Carrey (The Truman Show). Taking the plunge this time is SNL alum Andy Samberg (Space Chimps). Here is a man finding love while divorcing his best friend, Rasihda Jones (Myth America). She may be the main star but Andy is the main draw.

The Bad – Unfortunately, these types of movies don’t bring in the crowds. Most films of this ilk find life in art houses but rarely in the multiplexes. There is no doubt this is opening here based on Andy Samberg name, but I don’t see it staying any more than two weeks, tops.

The Ugly – Seeing Andy Samberg in a summer movie just reminds me that I saw That’s MyBoy. That movie suuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeeeeddddddd.

Celeste & Jesse Foreveris rated R for language, sexual content and drug use.

That’s all for this week. Tune in next time when the next Superman has some words with a bride to be. Until then, the mountain might get me but the law never will.
