WOW! WHAT AN EXCITING TWO WEEKS! THE RACE IS ON!

This has certainly been one of the most exciting two week periods in American political history.

This has certainly been one of the most exciting two week periods in American political history.  The Democrats had a unified convention after a divisive and, at times, bitter primary season.    The party largely came together behind the first African American ever nominated for the White House by a major political party.   Barack Obama chose an established senator as his running mate.   Joe Biden has been hitting the trail aggressively ever since.   Many Democrats thought Obama would pick rival Hillary Clinton for vice president... but those who know the inside of the campaign were correct.   In the end, Clinton apparently didn't get a lot of consideration.    She will campaign for Obama in Kentucky on September 20th.

Republicans had their convention jolted by a maverick pick for vice president.  Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is getting strong reviews from most Republicans and has aroused curiosity among some Democrats and many independents.   Her confident, comfortible speech was the talk of the convention.   Obama said family is off limits when the pregnancy of her 17-year old daughter was revealed.

Now what?   The campaigns will sprint toward November with the shortest period ever between the conventions and the election.   Polling shows it close... electoral college scenarios are all over the board.  Strap in for the ride!

I thought you might like to know some sites that I have interesting to check out from time to time while covering politics and making my beat calls.   The major political parties are GOP.COM for Republicans and Democrats.org for Democrats.... To find out who is contributing money to campaigns... there's Open Secrets.Org ... it has some interesting non-partisan articles that are included as well as data bases that can be searched right down to zip codes...    Electoral-Vote.Com  is a daily map of the electoral college based on the latest polls.... The Kentucky senate campaigns are at Bruce2000.com and TeamMitch.com.... Those interested in what the state parties are up to can check out RPK.org for Republicans and KyDemocrat.com for Democrats.    And for official information about the election ... the Kentucky Secretary of State's office is at SOS.KY.GOV.   Happy Hunting!

It's interesting to hear returning delegates talk about their experiences at the conventions.  One of the subtexts is those who may be angling among the true party activists for higher office.   Questions about the 2010 U.S. Senate race have surrounded Congressman Ben Chandler, Attorney General Jack Conway, Lt. Governor Dan Mongiardo and Auditor Crit Luallen, among other Democrats.   Republican Trey Grayson has also been very visible at the GOP convention  (at 6-5 or 6-6, he's always easy to spot in a crowd).   Grayson is touted for the senate should Jim Bunning opt out and for the 2011 gubernatorial nomination... of course, he could do either or neither or both.    Finance Secretary Jonathan Miller also watches behind the scenes and remains available for a congressional or statewide bid... according to how the stars align.

Centre College and WKYT are working to set up a U.S. Senate debate as we have done in most statewide elections over the years.    We're partnered with other stations to provide a statewide network, if we can get it worked out with the candidates.  Let them know you'd like to see them in Danville for a civil discussion of the issues!
