I've gotten some information from inside the McConnell camp that shows the Republican senate leader opening up a significant lead in his run for re-election. They've been doing some statewide polling and a note to the senator from the pollster says McConnell's overall lead is 17%.... McConnell 52% and Democrat Bruce Lunsford 35%. We are very cautious about distributing internals on air... we have a threshold for reporting there that requires us having some knowledge and confidence in the methodology.
But here on the blog... here's more of what we're hearing:
It also claims that McConnell leads in every section of the state... although it is very close in the Louisville area. It also suggests that despite attacks from Lunsford in recent weeks... McConnell's favorables are about 52%... unfavorable at 33%. The internal results also show Lunsford's favorables at 30% with 36% having an unfavorable opinion.
A Lunsford insider says McConnell's internals have always run 4 to 5 points higher for the senator than independent polls taken at the same time show. The Lunsford camp also feels the Republican convention's afterglow could be a factor in favor of McConnell. They also believe Hillary Clinton's visit to Kentucky could help with fundraising and momentum building later this month. But even the staunchest insiders acknowledge the Lunsford campaign has its work cut out for it and they hold out hope that the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee will pour some effort and dollars into the Kentucky race. It is one of 13 races that Democrats have labelled a 'target race.'
