IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID.... EARLY VOTING BEGINS.... BIDEN IN KENTUCKY

We have heard it as a refrain in many recent elections... made famous by the 1992 Bill Clinton campaign that refused to take its focus off the economy as the election approached. "It's the economy stupid" was up on the wall in Clinton's war room and has been visible in many campaign offices since. Remember that's the election where George H.W. Bush has an approval rating of nearly 90% after the first Gulf War. But as the campaign wore on, voters forgot about war and focussed on their pocketbooks.

So this year, both major campaigns for president seem to realize that once again "it's the economy stupid!" All polling shows the economy is the main concern of voters right now and nothing else is even close.

The question becomes what to say about the economy. Both campaigns (and most house and senate campaigns) promise to 'make things better.' Or indicate that things wouldn't have been this way in the first place had they been in charge. Both things are impossible to prove and the voters know that... BUT numerous campaigns will spend their resources hammering that point home. It's called 'politics.'

EARLY VOTING BEGINS

Some Kentuckians are already voting. A handful of states have started allowing walkin voters as opposed to the old carried around absentee ballot. Jefferson and a few other counties are already taking walkins. Fayette County will start on October 6th. Interestingly, we learned that counties are not required to report to the Secretary of State's office when they start voting. That may seem odd... although it's unclear if it's problematic in any way.

BIDEN IN KENTUCKY

The Obama campaign has pretty obviously written Kentucky off of its states to win. Interesting since no one has lost Kentucky and won the presidency since John Kennedy in 1960.

But even if Kentucky isn't seen as a state where Obama is likely to get the electoral votes, it's still seen as a source of campaign cash.

Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden is coming to Louisville this week for a fundraiser. Private dinner with Biden goes for $28,500 per couple. (A fellow worker said "One would hope it's fit to eat.") Supporters can get into a large reception for $1,000 each. Some Louisville reporters point out that Biden's brother lives in Louisville and we have no word on whether or how much he might be charged for dinner.
