Candidates Start Filing

It's one thing to think about and consider a run for political office... It's another when candidates actually start filing as they are now.

Secretary of State Trey Grayson is estimating thousands of candidates will go for office from city hall to the courthouse to the halls of Congress. It will be interesting to see how the economy plays into the field of actual candidates who get to the starting line.

During a downturn in the 1980s, several candidates ran without mentioning qualifications or goals. They only bluntly declared that they needed the job. Unfortunately, many will spend personal money they can't afford to waste in an effort to gain public office.

It is every qualified American's right to run for public office. But one would hope it is motivated by a desire to lead or serve and not personal gain. That is a slippery slope that office seekers should not head down.

YouTube Politics

Obviously, a big part of the coming campaign is going to be videos of candidates made by opponents. File sharing services like You Tube make it easy to distribute embarrassing video gathered by those who infiltrate campaigns. There is always an eager audience for these clips.

News organizations are charged with the responsibility of deciding when these clips are legitimate news and when they're just the latest clip made by an off duty volunteer or someone hoping to make points with the campaign. Since originators are often hard to contact, it can be difficult to authenticate the facts and legitimacy of the video.

When those who put videos together as jokes start becoming headlines... we probably have an editorial issue that's worthy of consideration and discussion. We'll keep a close and skeptical eye on this development.
