Since this is my inaugural post I thought it would be appropriate to tell a little about myself. Hopefully it will give a little insight into why I am writing about technology, other than the fact that I am a guy who loves gadgets.

Who in the @#$% is Tim?
Since this is my inaugural post I thought it would be appropriate to tell a little about myself. Hopefully it will give a little insight into why I am writing about technology, other than the fact that I am a guy who loves gadgets. For starters I manage the Internet initiative at WKYT and WYMT, their website(s) and all that falls under those responsibilities. My background is a lineage of all things tech starting with my time in the NAVY where I worked on Radars and Satellite Communication equipment. Sounds fun doesn’t it, it was. What does it mean for this BLOG, nothing except that if I had to I can read electronic schematics. My gut tells me that this skill will not come into play for this BLOG.
After the NAVY I worked for a computer firm out Houston Texas, UCS, traveling around Kentucky working on small proprietary networks. Before you send me any networking questions please remember the word “proprietary”, which means it’s useless for 99.9999% of the networks in operation today.
After working UCS, I started working for a local startup company to bring Video Vending Machines to the United States. Looking back this was a fun job, we worked hard, we spent a ton of money (OPM, Other Peoples Money) and we played hard. Some of you may remember the machines around Lexington and Cincinnati called “Cinevault”. That was when VHS tapes were the dominant media people used to view movies. Our one claim to fame was being the first Movie Rental service to have an online movie reservation system during that time. All of the big boys tried but failed, but they have since developed online reservations, which was inevitable.
Before coming to WKYT and WYMT I worked for an Internet Service Provider, DUROCOM, selling Internet connectivity to large businesses. If you only knew what it takes to make your surfing experience on the Internet fast it would blow your mind.
All of the background I just mentioned doesn’t necessarily mean I am qualified to talk about tech stuff. So what qualifies me as the guy to talk Tech? I am a GEEK at heart; all of my relatives call me when they can’t get connected to the Internet. Everyone has somebody like this in their circle of friends and family. Instead of telling them to call an 800 number for their service provider I usually walk them through and fix their problem while I have them on the phone. I am the one who reads the manuals so the rest of my family doesn’t have to.
Enough about me, on with the show; in the coming weeks we are going to discuss HDTV, apple vs. pc, cell phones, internet access, printers, internet marketing, building web sites and anything that catches my attention. Keep in mind that I may not have all of the answers, but I know people who can help answer most of them or I will find the answer for you. If you have suggestions or ideas you want me to cover please send them to this email address, internet@wkyt.com. Remember geeks control all of the electronics and data that make our world run. So we may look a little funny, a little overweight, dress funny, wear funny looking glasses, some have even been known to wear pocket protectors (the one stereo type I have avoided) . I look forward to seeing all of your comments.
