OK if you haven’t heard about twitter.com then you are not part of the internet in-crowd. People are all abuzz over the newest social networking tool. What is Social Networking; it is defined on Wikipedia as “A social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, ideas, financial exchange, friendship, kinship, dislike, conflict or trade. The resulting graph-based structures are often very complex.” The internet is evolving and is one big social network. Think back to days when Prodigy and AOL which were closed networks and did not have access to the “Internet”. They had chat rooms and other ways for people of like interest to communicate with each other. As the internet grew people ventured out form the closed networks like Prodigy and AOL and they started to lose ground to emerging social networks. Today Prodigy does exist in some form and AOL is struggling. You hear about MySpace and Facebook which started a whole new generation using social networks. Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of social networks are on the internet and new ones are being produced every day. For example Linkedin is for business people to connect with each other. I use it and have made connections with people through the service. In my email signature I include this line” Please join my professional network http://www.linkedin.com/in/timothycoles”. You may be using a social network and not even know it…
Back to Twitter. So what is twitter.com, you set up an account (http://twitter.com/timcoles) and you tweet throughout the day letting the people following you know what you’re doing. For example I posted; ”writing this week's blog - it's about twitter.com”. The idea is that I can tell people who follow me know what’s going on in my daily life and you can post from your cell phone. Sounds fun to some, for me I don’t know if I want people knowing how boring my daily life is. So instead of doing that I have set my Twitter page up to be my RSS feed for my BLOG. Is Twitter flash in the pan or will it be ousted by another social network? Only time will tell, for now it is a hot social network and I look forward to seeing how it is accepted. Will it grow or will it die? Send me links to other social networks you participate in and why you like them. I look forward hearing from you.
