I just wrote a BLOG calling social media our generations smoke break (http://www.wkyt.com/blogs/technologyblog/88433152.html). It's funny how an employer doesn't get upset when someone sits in the break room with their feet propped up with the sports section. But that same employer gets bent out of shape when they find out workers are accessing the internet during work hours. If you’re that concerned about the abuse of social media and internet use in your workplace then set a policy. The people who abuse it tend to be the ones who abuse every policy and are typically bad employees anyway. In a recent presentation I pointed out to a group of employers that prime-time on the internet is during work hours. You should have seen the looks I got but I pointed out prior to online banking we had to leave the office, not anymore. Prior to the internet employees went to the break room to read and when they were finished they would load up trash cans with old news papers, not anymore. Prior to online social media workers tied up phone lines keeping up with friends and family. If the phone lines were policed then employees used cell phones. If the internet is policed at work, guess what, you will find workers in bathroom stalls accessing the internet via their smart phones. I don't condone abusing internet privileges at work, but the employer and employee have to use common sense. If employees continue to abuse the internet then set a policy. If the problems continue then you have bigger problems.
