I have been testing the new Verizon Xoom from Motorola and it is Fast! If you have read any of my BLOGS you know I am an Apple fan. As you also know Verizon keeps having me trial android equipment, this is another great device. If you are not an Apple fan then you will love the Xoom tablet.

I have been testing the new Verizon Xoom from Motorola and it is Fast! If you have read any of my BLOGS you know I am an Apple fan. As you also know Verizon keeps having me trial android equipment, this is another great device. If you are not an Apple fan then you will love the Xoom tablet.

Verizon gave the tablet a day before I went on vacation. I was able to play with the device while I was traveling. We had a 2 ½ hour ride to our destination and I have some emails to catch up on. I set the device up as a WiFi hotspot and worked for almost an hour and a half. Another going on the trip was able to work on the device while it was also a hotspot for my laptop. It worked like a charm, it didn’t miss a beat. Once we left the 3G-network Internet performance was dramatically reduced. Where we were headed my AT&T service was just as poor so this isn’t a knock on the tablet or Verizon.

Once we were checked in I was able to connect via WiFi since data and phone service were limited. I downloaded my favorite apps that I use on my iPhone and test the device. I downloaded the WKYT Radar app for android and it worked great. (Here is the link if you want to download it, we do not have a tablet version but we do have an iPad version; https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wkyt.android.weather&feature=search_result)

The size of the tablet, the weight and the feel are well thought out. Coming from using an iPad I had to get used to the fact that it didn’t have a home button. Everything you need is on the screen. Once you get used to how to navigate, the layout is intuitive. The speed of the tablet is amazingly fast. I didn’t have an iPad 2 to compare it to but it out performed the first generation iPad I have. Where you really see the speed is opening apps and browsing.

The true test came when I handed the tablet over to my son Jack. The gamer extraordinaire downloaded a few games and wouldn’t give the device back. I had to check my computer case each day to make sure the Xoom was there before I went to work. Jack loved the device and preferred it to the iPad for gaming. He is eleven years old and his electronic learning curve is short so he had the Xoom figured out quickly.

I recommend this device if you are looking for a tablet and your not an Apple fan. If I had to point out any differences between the Xoom and iPad, it would be limited amount of apps versus Apple’s offerings. Other than apps the Verizon Xoom is a nice tablet and I don’t think you would be disappointed if you got one!
