It’s early in the high school football season, but already several teams are showing why they should be considered among the elite, and at the top of the football playing school list, at least for now. Here is a look at my top 10 and the reason why!

It’s early in the high school football season, but already several teams are showing why they should be considered among the elite, and at the top of the football playing school list, at least for now. Here is a look at my top 10 and the reason why!

1. Louisville Trinity They went up to Highlands and beat them 49-42 in a scrimmage game. Even though it was only a scrimmage game, it was much more than that to the Bluebird’s believe me. Next they beat a strong Indiana team Lawrence North soundly.

2. Louisville St. Xavier St. X showed a lot of resolve by holding off a very good Ballard team 35-34. They are the defending Class 6A champions and will likely be really good at the end of regular season play.

3. Boyle County The defending Class 4A state winner has one of the best coaches and player in the state in Larry French and Lamar Dawson respectively. They traveled to Johnson Central and knocked off the Jackets and set the tone for their season.

4. Ballard The Bruins have a solid football team and played St. Xavier down to the wire in a 35-34 heartbreaker, after trailing 28-0. The game came down to a failed conversion with 1.5 seconds left in the game. They have one of the best game breakers in a long time in Davante Parker.

5. Highlands The Bluebirds were lucky to beat Ryle last week. They have great team speed but I am not sure they have that special ingredient they need to be as good as last year.

6. Mayfield This year’s Mayfield team is one of the best Class A teams to come along in a while. Some are saying to just go ahead and engrave their name on the state trophy in Bowling Green.

7. Ryle The Raiders are getting there but still need to figure out how to beat the big boy’s. The talent is there with Cody Elliott and company who is an outstanding player. They had a big win over Covington Catholic 61-7 in week zero, who beat Lexington Catholic 54-21 this past week. They have a good coach in Bryson Warner who is a former Boone County grad.

8. Bell County Coach Dudley Hilton has another great shot at a Class 4A state title. Son John Michael is the real deal and an outstanding player. The Bell County/Boyle County game will be a war should they meet in the playoffs again this year.

9. Newport Central Catholic New head coach Eddie Eviston is picking right up where Bob Schneider left off. NCC is off to a great start with a big win over Dixie Heights.

10.Mason County Coach Buchanan has one of the best quarterbacks in Kentucky in senior Neal Pawsatt. The Royals will be very good by playoff time.

It is early in the season and a lot of other teams will improve and move towards the top. These teams look good to me at this time.

Catch The Scholastic Ball Report this Saturday at the special time of 10:30 a.m. on WKYT Channel 27, due to the airing of the US Open Tennis Tournament. Mason County will be the featured football team on this weeks show.
