Somerset Football Coach Rob Lucas knows what it is like to get to the top of the mountain. Somerset rode a 14 game winning streak into last year’s Class 3A state title game. The only thing that stood in the way of a coveted state crown was Paducah Tilghman. The Briar Jumpers did not know that the Blue Tornado would be their toughest opponent. With seven turnovers in the first half alone, Somerset was it own worst enemy in that game. Paducah Tilghman was able to convert those turnovers into a couple of key touchdowns, and went on to win the 2009 Class 3A state title.

We all know that experience is the best teacher so fast forward to the fall of 2010. The Briar Jumpers are currently ranked number one in Class 3A in the state. One big reason for that is they are protecting the football, and taking it away from their opponents on a regular basis. Somerset also has a “Manning” at the quarterback position and he’s the leading passer in Class 3A this season. Erik Manning has three big weapons to pass the ball to and they are Storm Wilson, J.P. Henderlight, and Cory Johnson. These three players have combined for 37 catches and 10 touchdowns this year. On defense the Jumpers are lead in tackles by Trey Slaughter who also has a record of 6 fumble recoveries.

Somerset is a great example of a team who lost a hard fought state title game last year, but decided to try to do what it takes to get back to Bowling Green. A lot of the credit goes to Rob Lucas and his fine football staff at Somerset High School for continuing to learn from past mistakes, and emphasizing to the players that hard work builds champions. It appears for the Briar Jumpers, that this years’ mission is clear. Get back to Bowling Green!

Don’t forget that Somerset is the ‘’Team of the Week” this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. on the Scholastic Ball Report on WKYT Chanel 27.
