Golf in Kentucky has reached a fever pitch with the recent Ryder Cup at Valhalla. This should translate into some very good State Golf in Bowling Green. The Leachman-Buick-Pontiac-GMC KHSAA Golf state Tournament gets underway next week and here are some random thoughts.

-The West Jessamine girls are back to defend there 2007 Title. Even though star Ashlee Rose is playing very well at UK now, another star is born in Betsy Johnson. Johnson was the Region 7 medalist and could lead a strong West team towards another state crown.

-In the boys 9th region Paul Dunbar and LCA played in a dramatic playoff for regional bragging rights. Both will go to the state tournament next week. Hunter Stewart of LCA was the medalist and is also a 4.0 student. He will lead a well balanced attack in Bowling Green. Look for Stewart and fellow Eagle, Blanton Farmer to head up a strong LCA challenge against Marshall County who is the defending state champion.

-JB Holmes may not be there in person knocking his usual 350 yard drives but his competitive spirit certainly will be. Taylor County, his old high school team has made it back to the State Golf Championships this year. Here’s one guy that thinks a pre-game pep talk by JB would pump up the Cardinals. I bet coach David Parsons has already been on the phone to JB.

-Bowling green is very fan friendly and the spectators who attend will be in for some great southern hospitality. It may not be the Ryder Cup, but these kids can certainly compete. If you just look at the scores from the Regional Golf tournaments you can see that High School Golf is played at a tremendous level. Kudos to the fans and high school golf supporters who follow high school golf.

-If the enthusiasm from Valhalla hasn’t gotten you at least thinking about Golf, then check your pulse and be sure you have one. If you have any fingernails left from the nail biting excitement of the Ryder Cup then take a trip to Bowling Green Country Club and check it out. After all you just may see the next JB Holmes or Kenny Perry.
