Coach Steve Jewell has the Corbin Redhounds believing in them in this football season. Corbin is coming off an impressive win last Friday over Middlesboro by a score of 14-7. Coach Jewell said his team really came together in a tough win on the road. Corbin has always had a rich tradition in high school sports and now the Redhounds are off to a 7 and 0 starts in 2008.

Coach Steve Jewell has the Corbin Redhounds believing in them in this football season. Corbin is coming off an impressive win last Friday over Middlesboro by a score of 14-7. Lance Freeman is now running the offense for Corbin. The senior quarterback was a starter at defensive back the past couple of years waiting behind four year starter Clint Cashen. Lance is a great athlete in two sports and excels in the sport of tennis. He has competed in high school tennis since the sixth grade, and has made seven straight trips to the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament. Coach Jewell likes Freemans’ ability to run and throw the football. Coach Jewell really likes what he does in the classroom carrying a 3.7 GPA.

Michael Campbell is possibly one the strongest football players to play at Corbin. His weight room workouts are legendary in and around Corbin. Michael told me his work ethic in the weight room helps him at the fullback and linebacker positions because they require a lot of strength. Campbell is one of the leaders on the team, and like E.F. Hutton, when Michael talks, his Corbin teammates listen.

That brings us to one of the more interesting stories on this years Corbin team. Dakota Taylor is from a long line of Taylors who have played at Corbin. His uncle Greg is in the Hall of Fame at Corbin, and was a running back on the State Championship Team back in the 80’s. Dakotas father Roy was also a state champion running back for the Redhounds. Taylors have always graced the gridiron for Corbin, and there are more family members waiting in the wings. Dakota is also a star in the classroom carrying a 3.8 GPA. Dakota said he is positive that his excellence in the classroom is making his dad Roy more proud of him than anything else.

I asked Coach Jewell if this team reminds him of other past Corbin teams. He said there are some similarities. Coach Jewell said he and the coaching staff were having a conversation recently about some of the previous teams. He mentioned the fact that this years’ team is unselfish with no superstar attitudes. They are a great group of kids that work very hard and play very tough as a team. Corbin is currently ranked #3 in Class AA behind defending State Champion Ft. Campbell and Newport Catholic. Look for the Redhounds to make some noise come playoff time in November.
