Depending on who you talk too, this could be the best Mason County High School Football team ever. The Royals are ranked as high as #4 in the Class AAA poll in Kentucky High School Football. Royals fans are comparing this team to the great team of 2003 who was successful with quarterback Dustin Grutza and wide receiver Chris Lofton.

Coach David Buchanan has really turned around the football mindset at this Maysville high school. Buchanan has a 95-51 record since arriving at the river city school. Previously Mason County’s record was 63-111. The Royals currently sit at 5-2 with their only losses to 6A power Boone County with a score of 28-18, and Campbell County, another 6A school... The Royals play on the road for the District title Friday night against Ivan Mcglone and the Russell Red Devils.

Senior Tailback Jeremy Thompson leads the offense with 795 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns. Thompson is coming off a Homecoming game that has the entire Mason County alumni talking. Thompson rushed for 228 yards and five touchdowns against Bourbon County in a Mason 38-18 win. The Royals also have a star in the making with sophomore quarterback Neal Pawsatt. Neil has thrown for 1,170 yards while completing over 55% of his passes. He has a good receiving corps lead by track star Terrence Breckinridge at wide-out... Andy Cooper anchors a very good offensive line that was a big question mark going into the 2008 season.

One of the more interesting stories for the Royals is in the development of their kicking game. Everyone knows how a lot of high schools get there kickers from soccer teams. The Royals have two kickers from the girl’s soccer team. Jessica and Rebecca Batey are twins and both are seniors. Jessica is the place kicker and Rebecca is the kick-off specialist. Both girls have signed to play soccer at Asbury College.

In talking with Coach Buchanan it is his feeling that overall this is the best team he has had at Mason County. To be mentioned in the company of Mason County Football Royalty, a win on the road may be an indicator of how they stack up come playoff time. If memory serves me right, in the not to distant past, Dustin Grutza and company threw a major scare into Highlands in the 2003 state semi-finals in Ft Thomas. The road for the 2008 team will be just as treacherous as that team. The trip could include games against perennial favorites such as Breathitt County, Belfry and defending state champion Louisville Central. My friend and long time WFTM radio voice Danny Weddle really likes the 2008 team also, and looks forward to the post-season journey as well. Danny is the Royal’ statistics guru and special thanks go to him for being a resource for this article.

Mason County is the featured “Team of Week” this Saturday at 11:30a.m. On WKYT and THE SCHOLASTIC BALL REPORT.
