Who Is Number One?

The question I’ve been asked is who is my number one high school team in this basketball rich state of Kentucky. While there are many worthy candidates who could be at the top, at this point in the season my top team is Elliott County.

The question I’ve been asked is who is my number one high school team in this basketball rich state of Kentucky. While there are many worthy candidates who could be at the top, at this point in the season my top team is Elliott County. To me they personify the characteristics of a great team. They have great guards in the Faulkner twins, Ethan and Evan. They have the states’ most dynamic scorer in Jonathon Ferguson. Timmy Knipp at 6-9 gives them a big presence inside. Another reason I put them at number one is they play so hard and epitomize what “team” really means.

Other teams scrambling for the top spot include Covington Holmes and Scott County. Holmes would have gotten my nod if they still had that lockdown defender Arrez Henderson like last year. I have seen them play this year and while the Johnson brothers are terrific, Elijah Pittman is one of the key players in their ball club. In addition, Jamel Riley needs to continue making three point shots for the team to move up.

Scott County needs more time to mesh together as a unit, and come February they could be very dangerous. Louisville Eastern and J-town also belong in the conversation regarding the number one slot. Other teams in the mix that I like are Mason County and Bryan Station. Clark County and Christian County are teams to watch also come tournament time.

It may only be January but early predictions will be made when the state tournament draws are held on the 30th of this month at 1:00p.m. on WKYT-Channel 27.

And don’t forget to watch the game highlights on The Scholastic Ball Report Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. on WKYT Channel 27.
