The Houchens/KHSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament opens up this week in Bowling Green. All games are scheduled at E.A Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Here are some random thoughts about the tourney. Iroquois is back under the tutelage of Al Northington after a one year absence. The Butler Bearrettes won the state title last year. Previously, Iroquois had made four straight trips to the “Big Dance” before falling in the Finals in 2007 to Lexington Christian Academy. Iroquois brings experience and leadership to the State Tournament and will be hard to beat, and Adia and Asia Mathis will be ready for the challenge.

LCA is back from the eleventh Region with three of the best players in the tournament in Courtney Clifton, Anna Martin and Sarah Beth Barnett. LCA has won three straight “ALL A” titles and appear to be primed to add another sweet 16 ring to their collection under Jason Seamonds. LCA will have a tough opening round against #1 Elizabethtown with standout Alex Jones who is headed to Eastern Kentucky University to continue her basketball career.

Montgomery County is making their fifth straight trip to the state tournament also. The Lady Indians are coached by Janie Robinson and are capable and experienced enough to the big prize home to Mt. Sterling. The Lady Indians are led by Mackenzie Lee and a cast of seniors with size and determination.

This should be a great Sweet 16 in Bowling Green. Make the drive and support the girls and you will enjoy it, I promise.
