As we begin another high school sports season in Kentucky, it is also time to kick off another Scholastic Ball Report (“SBR”) on WKYT Channel 27. The “SBR” was begun back in 2003 with the intention of spotlighting high school student athletes primarily representing all sports and activities sanctioned by the KHSAA.

The show also emphasizes the academic side of sports. The “Scholar Athlete of the Week” sponsored by Kentucky Bank recognizes any student athlete who maintains a GPA of 3.5 or above. In addition the “Comeback Athlete of the Month” is given to a student athlete who has returned to participate after a serious accident. This segment is sponsored by UK Sports Medicine and Don Joy, and has become a very popular aspect of the show.

Louis Stout and I will once again host this show which airs on Saturday Mornings at 11:30a.m. on WKYT Channel 27, and on a network of stations throughout the state of Kentucky. Consult local listings for times in your area. The show is produced through the facilities of WKYT in Lexington.

Each week coaches bring male and female student athletes in all sports along with their stories into the studio and into our lives. They share interesting highlights about themselves, their schools and their local communities. The coaches and athletes appear to really enjoy being a part of the show when they come out to the studio each week. They are always enthusiastic about sharing information about their sports and school activities which makes the show fun and different each week. I am always appreciative of the energy and spirit of cooperation when I contact the schools each week, to coordinate the guests and schedule the dates and times for interviews. In addition, the high school interns who help with the show add to the show and bring a fresh high school perspective to the content of their segments.

If you have any story ideas or student athlete recommendations for the show contact me via e-mail ballg@windstream.net. Thanks, and let’s have another great year of high school sports in the Commonwealth.
