The Ball Report

Who’s Number One in Football?

This time of the year many people are curious about which high school football team is the best in Kentucky. While I have seen many of the Lexington teams, I have not seen some of the other statewide contenders. However, like anyone, I can certainly offer an opinion on the teams I have seen and am familiar with so far this year.

This time of the year many people are curious about which high school football team is the best in Kentucky. While I have seen many of the Lexington teams, I have not seen some of the other statewide contenders. However, like anyone, I can certainly offer an opinion on the teams I have seen and am familiar with so far this year.

One team I have seen is Bryan Station, currently ranked third in 6A Football in Kentucky. The Defenders are off to their best start in 17 years with a 5-1record to date. Coach Oliver Lucas has one of the best running backs in the state named Tevin McAden. He has gained 1,200 yards to date and achieved 17 scores in the first half of the season. The offensive line at Station is one of the better lines I have seen this season. That said, I think Bryan Station deserves to be in the discussion for top teams in the area.

Boyle County is also a worthy team with Rees McShara in the backfield and Coach Larry French at the helm. I think this Rebel football team has all the makings for another state championship run in “Title Town”.

Highlands just cracked the nation’s top 25 rankings with a 12-7 win over Cincinnati St. Xavier, who had previously crushed Louisville Trinity and Louisville St.Xavier. They also got a tough break when quarterback Will Bardo was injured in the game and is still uncertain for the Bluebirds at this time. Highlands is obviously another worthy number one choice in the state.

My other choices for the number one spot are Ft.Campbell, Louisville St.Xavier and Henry Clay. However, if I would have to pick a number one team in the state overall right now, I would go with Coach Dale Mueller and the Highlands Bluebirds.
