With all the discussion about the state high school football championships being held in Bowling Green this year on December 4th and 5th, I wanted to give my perspective and why it will be a good experience. Having been a part of the broadcast team for the Houchens KHSAA Girls Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament the last several years, it has giving me an opportunity to check out what Bowling Green has to offer.

Let’s start with the food. There is great franchise food there such as the original Raffertys, Montana Grill, and Double Dogs. I also like the local eateries like the Bistro, Mariah’s and Toots for their famous fried dill pickles. One of my favorites is Albany’s Steak House. The food is really good and reasonable. If you are in a hurry like I usually am between games they will get you in and out very quickly. The servers are very friendly and I eat there every time I am in Bowling Green. One of my favorite dishes is the Teriyaki Sirloin.

Houchens L.T. Smith Stadium is newly renovated and there is not a bad seat in the house. Spectators will experience an up close and personal view of the competition that this stadium affords. From a broadcasters perspective the view from the press box is excellent and you can take in the football action from really close range. Parking around the stadium is ample on Western’s beautiful campus and access is easy.

Another attractive feature in the Bowling Green area is the hotel/motel accommodations. Hotels are convenient to the stadium shopping and restaurants. I have stayed at a couple of places while working in Bowling Green and have been very pleased with accommodations and the hospitality of the staff. As someone who used to work in the Hotel industry I am appreciative of good service and friendly people when I travel.

Hats off to the Bowling Green Tourism and Visitors Bureau who have the right idea on hosting events and making people feel at home during their stay.

So hit the road for the upcoming football finals at WKU in Bowling Green that get under way on Friday December 4th. Here is one sportscaster than is looking forward to a great weekend of high school football.
