This Friday, November 12, 2010, Henry Clay will host Simon Kenton who travels from Independence, Kentucky for a football rematch. The significance of this game is obvious, as they are playing for the right to advance in the second round of the Class 6A Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl playoff system. These two teams met back in September and it was a barn burner with Simon Kenton winning 21-18.
Fast-forward to November and the playoffs. Coach Jeff Marksberry of Simon Kenton has his Pioneers playing 9-2 Football with a Class 6A #5 statewide ranking. The “neers” are led by a do everything quarterback Chad Lawrence. Chad, a senior, has rushed for over 1,000 yards and passed for 2,200 with 24 touchdown passes. The Pioneers also have one of the best receivers in the state, in Ryan Winkler who has 62 receptions, 884 yards, and 9 touchdown catches. Simon Kenton also has a strong defense led by linebacker Austin Baldwin who leads the team in tackles. The defense will be the key as Henry Clay is really fast, more like a track team in football pads.
Henry Clay also sports a 9-2 record and is ranked #8 in Class 6A football. After starting slow with a 1-2 record the Blue Devils have won eight in a row. Coach Sam Simpson always seems to have his team playing well at playoff time. The big change for Henry Clay was moving Vinny Miller to starting quarterback. He has five starts to date with 900 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns to his credit.
Jerry Williams also has been impressive running and catching the football and has 600 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns under his belt. Blake Green has 4.4 speed and is hard to matchup in the secondary for any team’s defense. On defense the Blue Devils are led by linebacker Charles McCarty. Darius Fields and Cy Smith anchor the D-line. This is shaping up to be a super game Friday night at Henry Clay.
