It’s hard to believe the summer is over in central Kentucky. That means it’s time for the beginning of another great season of high schools sports.

It’s hard to believe the summer is over in central Kentucky. That means it’s time for the beginning of another great season of high schools sports. I am proud to be a part of one television show that covers every sport played by KHSAA member schools and it originates right here in Lexington.

The “Scholastic Ball Report” concept was a brain child of mine back in 2003. As the Co-host of  The Kentucky Scoreboard Show with former KHSAA Commissioner Louis Stout, I casually mentioned to him one night that maybe we should bring the show to television.  He looked at me like I had just lost my senses. Crazy as it sounds that’s where it all began.

Some time later I approached Wayne Martin and Mike Kanarek at WKYT about the idea for a high school show. They were receptive and with their support and confident manner, we launched the first show in August of 2003.  So here we are, still going strong in 2011. The show focuses on the many male and female scholar athletes in all sports. There is also a sports medicine segment with University of Kentucky trainers and physicians in the studio each week.  They provide sports medicine tips, along with up to date training methods to help keep the high school student athletes healthy for participation.    There is also a weekly golf segment (in-season), a featured sports team of week, and special features from other television stations and viewing areas around the state. Kar Smart sponsors the Drive of the Week, which is the best   football play of  the week.

In addition one thing that changes every school year is the addition of a new group of  high school interns from different  Kentucky high schools.  They are learning about the world of television and broadcasting, and are refining their public speaking skills on air by interviewing their peer high school students.

Kelly Beile is the new co-host this season, and replaces Louis Stout who retired from the show at the end of last year.  Brian Milam is also a fixture and provides great support with his work both on and off camera, and Brandon Fisher coordinates the ever popular Friday Night Flights each week

.  The Scholastic Ball Report airs Saturday’s at 11:30 am on WKYT Chanel 27. I hope you will tune in and give us some feed back on the show through FACEBOOK. Please note that this Saturday, September 3rd,  the show will air at 10:30 am due to the  U.S . Open Tennis Championships.
