Updated: 11:36 AM The Houchens/KHSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament opens up this week in Bowling Green. All games are scheduled at E.A Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Here are some random thoughts about the tourney.
Posted: 9:10 AM The Tenth Regions’ defending champion is also the National City KHSAA Sweet 16 defending champion from Mason County. Coach Chris O’hearn and the Royals are trying to do something that hasn’t been done in a long time in Kentucky high school basketball.
Posted: 8:12 AM Tates Creek boys head basketball coach Wayne Breeden is building a foundation for a successful program one step at a time with strong fundamental play. Breeden stresses fundamentals in practice and it carries over to the games.
Posted: 7:16 PM The Anderson County Bearcats are quietly putting together a super boys basketball season in 2009. Coach Glen Drury has led the Bearcats to a 17-4 record up to this point in the season.
Posted: 9:09 AM Congratulations to the Lexington Christian Lady Eagles for setting the standard in the Touchstone Energy All-A Basketball Classic. Coach Jason Seamonds and the lady Eagles won an unprecedented third title this past weekend at Alumni Coliseum in Richmond.
Posted: 8:03 PM The West Jessamine Colts Junior point guard Jarrod Polson had a weekend for the ages last week. Polson scored 87 points in two games, first against Mercer County and then Lexington Catholic.
Posted: 10:12 AM Garrard County is quietly putting together one of the best starts in school history with their boys basketball team. Coach Lee DeForest has guided the Golden Lions to the best record in the twelfth region with a 14 and 3 start so far this year.
Posted: 9:27 AM The question I’ve been asked is who is my number one high school team in this basketball rich state of Kentucky. While there are many worthy candidates who could be at the top, at this point in the season my top team is Elliott County.
Posted: 9:07 AM Coach Carl ‘Red’ Hutchinson has guided Paul Dunbar’s boys basketball team to a 7 and 1 record so far this year. The Bulldogs have not lost to an in state team all season. The team looks poised for a run at the city championship in 2009.
Posted: 11:16 AM Now is the time of the year to take in some good High School Basketball games. There is an abundance of great Holiday Hoops Tournaments going on around the state. Here are a few of them that are definitely worth the drive, and price of admission.
Posted: 8:51 AM As the KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl approaches this weekend many people are inquiring about radio coverage. Each of the six class champions will be crowned at Papa Johns Stadium, and all of the games will be carried live on the Rawlings/KHSAA Radio Network. Games can be heard beginning Friday December 12th at 11:00 a.m.
Posted: 10:24 AM High school football is coming to a close on December 12 and 13 in Louisville. However, many would argue that the big games are this week in the state semifinal round. I thought I would take a look at the big match-ups this week that are pointing toward the finals of KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl of 2008.
Posted: 9:54 AM One of the best high school football playoff games in the state is scheduled for this Friday at Boyle County High School in Danville. The Rebels of Boyle County are currently 12-0. They were victorious in the first meeting against Lexington Catholic during the regular season back on September 26th by a score of 14-11.
Posted: 3:01 PM Early in the season Bryan Station football coach Oliver Lucas used a quote I thought was memorable. He said “my pups have grown up”. And, boy did they ever grow up last Friday night in Ft. Thomas.
Posted: 8:37 AM Henry Clay has put it together as a football team toward the end of regular season play which is when it counts. Coach Sam Simpson has the Blue Devil sights set on another playoff run for 2008. Ryle is their opponent on Friday and they are a good team out of the traditionally rich Northern Kentucky area. Henry Clay rides a five game winning streak into week one of the 6-A playoffs.
Posted: 8:41 AM As you have probably noticed the High School Football season is winding down for 2008. Regular season play ends Friday, November 7th and the playoffs begin Friday Nov 14th. The following are some random thoughts on the 2008 season heading into the playoffs.
Posted: 9:10 AM In Class a Football the Frankfort High Panthers are having a great season under Coach Craig Foley. The Panthers are 6 & 1 and ranked #3 in Class A behind Beechwood and Raceland. The remarkable thing is that Frankfort is accomplishing all of this after losing all-stater and Mr. Football finalist, E.J. Fields who is now suiting up for the Kentucky Wildcats.
Posted: 11:12 PM Depending on who you talk too, this could be the best Mason County High School Football team ever. The Royals are ranked as high as #4 in the Class AAA poll in Kentucky High School Football. Royals fans are comparing this team to the great team of 2003 who was successful with quarterback Dustin Grutza and wide receiver Chris Lofton.
Posted: 9:06 AM Coach Steve Jewell has the Corbin Redhounds believing in them in this football season. Corbin is coming off an impressive win last Friday over Middlesboro by a score of 14-7. Coach Jewell said his team really came together in a tough win on the road. Corbin has always had a rich tradition in high school sports and now the Redhounds are off to a 7 and 0 starts in 2008.
Posted: 12:02 PM The Madison Central Indians are primed for a big run in football through Class 6A. Kenny Turner has the Indians believing they can compete with anyone in the big class. He certainly seems to have the players to back it up for 2008. Star Running Back Keyshawn Simpson is back after sitting out last year out with a leg injury, and Isaiah Cavanaugh returns as well. Central has many more weapons as this football season unfolds. Zach Coldiron is the new Quarterback taking over for Chaz Hope who graduated. Coldiron does a good job running the offense behind a huge offensive line. The O-line is anchored by all-state lineman Larry Warford at 6-6 and 300 pounds. Warford has already committed to play for Kentucky next year.
Updated: 9:17 AM Golf in Kentucky has reached a fever pitch with the recent Ryder Cup at Valhalla. This should translate into some very good State Golf in Bowling Green. The Leachman-Buick-Pontiac-GMC KHSAA Golf state Tournament gets underway next week and here are some random thoughts.
Posted: 11:48 AM After covering Woodford County and Bryan Station on Friday, each team has what it takes to advance into the 5A playoffs come November. Here are the reasons why:
Posted: 11:00 AM My story begins as a kid growing up in Lexington. Living in the south end of Lexington, I played every sport I could at Cardinal Valley Park. My second home was in that park in the summer, playing Little League Baseball games until dark.
