The Tough Training & Mental Game

A week of heavy training for a triathlon can not only zap your physical endurance, but also strain the mental part of the process which says "I can do this even though I am really spent."

First Race

Six-weeks into serious training I had my first triathlon of the season-Heart & Sole in Versailles. I have raced it the last three years, and enjoy the course. The 400- yard swim is in the pool at Falling Springs Recreational, the 14-mile bike course snakes thru pretty Woodford County including right thru downtown Versailles, and the 5K run is all cross country.

Finding time for training, and preparing mentally are two of the biggest obstacles as we get the 2010 triathlon season underway. I train six-days a week under the coaching of Eric Atnip.

Injuries

The 2010 triathlon season is off to a great start! No serious pain or aches. My coach, Eric Atnip, calls them "overuse" injuries, and he's right. Swimming, biking, and running six-days a week will take a toll on your body, and when you are a soon-to-be 54 year-old, that's an under statement.
