Mike Freeman, national columnist for CBSSports.com, has put together his list of the 50 biggest jerks in sports.
Checking in at No. 35... one John Calipari.
Why? Freeman says, "Needs no explanation."
Didn't coach Cal recently fly to Haiti, where he handed out shoes and washed the feet of homeless children? This coming on the heels (no pun intended) of Calipari and his Cats using the WKYT studios to raise more than $1 million for Haiti earthquake relief?
Sure, Cal has his basketball detractors. There are many who think UK has become synonymous with "one and done."
For the record, Calipari has said he's opposed to the rule which allows players to stay in school just one year before heading off to the riches of the NBA.
But off the court, Cal has been impressive. In his short time in Lexington, he's befriended a kid in Indianapolis who suffers from a brain tumor; he's organized a telethon for Haiti, then backed it up by flying there to deliver shoes to orphans; and last week washed the feet of inner city Detroit children, before handing out more sneakers to those in need.
These are just several examples that we know about. There may be more.
Oh. And there's also the Calipari Family Foundation for Children, which has given money to flood victims and $1 million to Street Ministries of Memphis.
At least give UK fans a reason why their basketball coach made the list.
No. 34... Rick Pitino.
This name, I'm sure, Cat fans will agree upon.
Those are the highlights... Stay tuned.
