Former Lexington Catholic quarterback Justin Burke is leaving North Carolina State and is enrolling at Louisville.  Burke, a redshirt sophomore, was the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year after leading Catholic to a state title in 2005.

Burke was told by his coaches that three other quarterbacks had a leg up on the position, so Burke decided he would leave.  I’m told Burke could have graduated from NC State in 2 1/2 years.

UK recruited Burke, but the 6-foot-3, 220 lb. Burke chose the Wolpack instead, citing NC State, with the Research Triangle and other technologies nearby, as an educational opportunity he wanted to explore.

When Burke decide to transfer, Brooks was notified and asked to gauge his interest.  Brooks apparently has bigger fish to fry — Carmel, Ind. quarterback Morgan Newton is expected to commit to the Wildcats on Thursday.

Burke will be allowed to practice with the Cardinals this season, but will lose a year of eligibilty with the transfer, because he’s already used his redshirt.  The Cards will lose starter Hunter Cantwell to graduation next year, but have two outstanding freshman quarterbacks on the roster, including Phil Simms’ son, Matt.
