Greetings from Birmingham, home of the Southeastern Conference. Greetings from Birmingham, home of the Southeastern Conference.

The annual SEC Basketball Media Days begin in a few hours, and coaches and players from across the league will take turns telling us why their teams will be better this year, than last.  It's the official kickoff, er, tip-off, to the basketball season in the south.

UK's contingent, coaches Billy Gillispie and Matthew Mitchell, will be in town on Thursday.  But the Wednesday docket isn't short on excitement.  Former Tates Creek star Darrin Horn makes his first appearance at these meetings, as the new coach at South Carolina.  The Gamecocks haven't won an NCAA Tournament game in 35 years.  Expectations of their new coach couldn't be higher.

Also due in on Wednesday, Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl, who, in a few weeks, is one of the featured speakers, along with Colin Powell and Rudy Giuliani, at a motivational seminar in Nashville.  Maybe Pearl can glean some insight into this year's season.  His Vols are favored to win the SEC crown.

Finally, one of my favorites, Rick Stansbury, closes out the day on Wednesday.  Stansbury, who's led the Bulldogs to back-to-back SEC West titles, always has a few kind words for the Bluegrass State.  Stansbury grew up in Meade Co. and played at Campbellsville, so he's sure to ask about the current state of Georgetown College basketball and how the Cats will fair this season.

It's a taxing couple of days, but interesting to hear from the league's coaches and players.  Be sure to catch Rob Bromley's reports from the SEC Media Days, beginning Wednesday night at 6:30.

Those are the highlights... Stay tuned.
