In case UK fans missed it, the RCA Dome, sight of some memorable Wildcat basketball games, now is nothing more than rubble.

In case UK fans missed it, the RCA Dome, sight of some memorable Wildcat basketball games, now is nothing more than rubble.

About 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, nearly 1000 pounds of explosives, connected by 2 ½ miles of fuse, brought the 24-year-old building to the ground, as the former Hoosier Dome was imploded, giving way to expansion of the Indiana Convention Center.

The 1-million-square-foot, four-level stadium was home to the Indianapolis Colts since 1984. The facility also served as the sight of the 1985 NBA All-Star game, four Final Fours and one Women’s Final Four (2005).

Kentucky fans will recall the Big 4, an annual event which featured UK, Louisville, Indiana and Notre Dame in a rotating doubleheader, staged annually at the Dome. The Wildcats first played in the event in 1987, losing 87-76 in overtime to the Hoosiers. Kentucky was 1-1 vs. Notre Dame there.

All-time, the Cats were 6-4 against Indiana there. UK was blown out in its last appearance there in 2005, losing 79-53. The 15th-ranked Cats saw their five-game winning streak over the Hoosiers snapped -- the 26-point margin is still the largest for IU in the series history.

The Dome was good to the Wildcats, however. UK played in two NCAA Tournaments there, including the 1997 Final Four, where the Cats knocked off Minnesota in the national semifinals, before losing in overtime to Arizona in the National Championship game.

In 2005, UK and EKU squared off in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the RCA Dome. Travis Ford’s Colonels fell, 72-64. UK then toppled Cincinnati two days later, 69-60, advancing to the NCAA Regional in Austin.

Additionally, of the 15-largest crowds ever to see the Cats play, seven of those games were played in the RCA Dome
