Meeks continues torrid scoring streak, torches Tide

Coming out of Norcross High School, Jodie Meeks was a 4-star guard who chose UK over Alabama. How fitting, then, that the SEC's top scorer torch the Tide on Saturday?

For the seventh straight game, Meeks went for 20 points or more, scoring 27 against Alabama and tying a career-high with nine rebounds. The last Wildcat to scoree 20 or more in seven straight games was Kevin Grevey, back in 1974-75.

The Wildcats trailed at halftime, 25-19. Meeks had 11 of UK's 19 points. It's the 14th time this season that Meeks has reached double figures in the first half, the ninth time in the last 10 games.

So how good has Meeks been this year? Bama coach, Mark Gottfried, who recruited Meeks out of high school, called Meeks' 54-point effort at Tennessee the highest level performance he's seen in his 11 years as the Crimson Tide's coach.

Earlier this week, Gottfried told the Birmingham News that Meeks was high on Bama's recruiting radar. "At one time I thought he was leaning toward coming here," Gottfried is quoted as saying, "but Tubby Smith did a great job recruiting him right there at the very end. Obviously, we're happy with the guys we've signed, but we did recruit him very hard."

As for missing out on the league's hottest player: "Life moves on," Gottfried said.

At 26.1 points per game, Meeks leads the Southeastern Conference and is third nationally in scoring.
