Scott Co.'s Phares turning heads

Center Richie Phares arguably has been Scott Co.'s best player for the past couple of seasons. Whether patrolling the paint, or knocking in mid-range jumpers, Phares plays with a warriors' mentality and is one of the biggest reasons the Cards are rolling along at 17-3, winners of their last 13.

They are the favorite to win a state championship, if not the bane of other high school teams around Kentucky.  Billy Hicks and Scott Co. know how heavy those expectations are -- they've been there a few times before.

Hicks can put five outstanding players on the court at once -- some say all five will play division one basketball.  Dakotah Euton already has committed to playing at UK.  His teammates, too, are beginning to receive attention from some of the biggest schools in the country.

It's a bit curious for this blogger that Phares hasn't picked up more scholarship offers than he has.  That may change soon.  Phares tells the Georgetown News-Graphic that schools now are calling, that both UK and Louisville have asked him to walk-on.  Phares says he hasn't spoken directly to U of L coach Rick Pitino, but the man himself recently watched Phares perform in the Toyota Classic.

Phares has a few scholarship offers in hand.  He tells the paper that Jacksonville, Boston and Georgetown College have offered a scholarship.  Dusquense and Marshall are also interested.

It's not known if Phares is entertaining the idea of walking-on at UK or Louisville.  Should the Cards reach the Sweet 16, Phares can take his game to a bigger stage, which might lead to additional interest from other schools.

Those are the highlights... Stay tuned.
