While the Wildcats will miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991, Morehead State will play sometime next week in the big dance, it's first trip to the tournament in 25 years. That's when Wayne Martin and the Eagles were making back-to-back trips in '83 and '84.
As part of the celebration at Morehead on Sunday, CBS' coverage of Selection Sunday may well include the Eagles and their fans. The school is inviting people to the Adron Doran University Center on campus to watch as the brackets are unveiled. Since MSU won the OVC Tournament, and are automatic qualifiers, the suspense isn't whether Morehead is in, but who they play and where.
WKYT will provide CBS with a constant video feed from the ADUC. The big wigs at the network tell us that as soon as Morehead's bracket and pairing is revealed, the reaction shot of the players and coaches will be broadcast LIVE during the coverage.
It's another opportunity for Morehead State to grab some national exposure.
To be sure, the Eagles likely will be a 16-seed, which means they might have to play the likes of North Carolina, UConn, Louisville or Pittsburgh. But don't rule out the possibility of MSU being paired in the "play in" game. Coach Donnie Tyndall would welcome that scenario, because it gives his team a chance to win an NCAA Tournament game, PLUS, be on national television twice.
We'll all find out together when the selection show airs on WKYT. Coverage begins at 6:00 p.m..
You can also see a special edition of Sports Spectrum, beginning at 11:20 on Sunday night. We'll recap the brackets, be live in Morehead for reaction to the tournament field, talk to Kyle Macy about playing in the NIT, and hear from Georgetown coach Happy Osborne, who's Tigers will be making their 18th straight trip to the NAIA national tournament.
Those are the highlights... Stay tuned.
