UK coach John Calipari said he didn't anticipate adding another player to next year's Wildcat roster. Calipari made the comments on Saturday morning, moments after participating in the UK women's basketball's "5K for 5 K" run. Calipari was the race starter. "It's finally completed now," Calipari said. "In all my years, if you look back, we've had years where we had nine or 10 scholarship players. Most years we're going to have 11 to 12. " The NCAA limit is 13. The coach reiterated that he wants happy, hungry players on his team and he feels it's difficult to please everyone, especially when players want more minutes. "It's hard to keep 13 players happy," Calipari said. "You don't want any players here who aren't going to play and aren't going to be happy." Calipari hinted his roster might even lose one player. "Right now, we have 12 scholarship players. We could have 11 by the time the year starts. You just don't know."
Bucks love Jodie Calipari noted that former Memphis guard Chris Douglas-Roberts was a second-round pick in the 2008 NBA Draft (40th pick to New Jersey), making the comparison to former Wildcat Jodie Meeks. "He (Douglas-Roberts) was a second-team All-American. Very similar to Jodie Meeks. So I think Jodie's going to be fine," Calipari said. Calipari said Douglas-Roberts was a starter for the Nets by the end of last season. Calipari said he's spoken to a couple of Milwaukee's front office guys and both insist the organization is high on Meeks.
Newcomers on campus John Wall arrived on campus last week. Wall participated in one of the basketball camps on UK's campus, and afterward, was mobbed by kids seeking his autograph. Calipari said Darnell Dodson is "finishing up some stuff," and hopes the junior college transfer will be back for the last 4-week summer school session. Daniel Orton was in Lexington, but isn't on campus now. It has been reported that Orton, along with Patrick Patterson, is training on the west coast with Frank Matrisciano, the fitness guru who helped Blake Griffin become this year's top pick in the NBA Draft. Calipari said he doesn't mind his players spending the free summer months conditioning at their own pace, on their own time. "I just want them to be back here ready to go. I don't care if they're in Alaska, Honolulu, wherever they want to go work out, as long as when they come back they take responsibility for their summer."

Jim, I find it interesting that you are second-guessing Calipari. How many years have you coached Division 1 basketball? Posted by: Jim Location: Lexington I'm a bit confused by the comments made by coach Calipari. I understand his thinking of trying to keep everyone happy, but that's never gonna happen unless we go with five. There are several things wrong with this scenario. The first thing is that you obviously need at least ten to scrimmage. It's almost inevitable that players will get banged up during the course of the season, miss practices now and then, and a couple of season ending injuries and you're really not in an ideal situation. Another thing......does he intend to have walk-ons when we have one or more open scholarship slots? Maybe he just hasn't had enough time to elucidate his thinking, or maybe I just don't get it. There are other things troubling about this path, but I'll leave it at that. |
