Saying it was something new and exciting, UK coach John Calipari said this season fans will see more of the pick and roll , an NBA staple.
"It kind of fits us," Calipari said, before addressing coal owners and operators on Friday at the annual Kentucky Coal Association meetings in Lexington.
"It's a way for us to get into the dribble drive. It's not the end, it's the beginning."
Calipari has said before that his involvement with the Domican Republic national team, the NBA players in town during the lockout, even his budding relationship with former Louisville coach Denny Crum, has given him new ideas.
"It's something for us to experiement with."
Cats preseason No. 2
The first preseason basketball poll is out and Kentucky checks in at No. 2.
In the first ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll, North Carolina is a solid No. 1, picking up 30 of 31 first place votes. Kentucky got the only other No. 1 vote.
When asked today about the lofty ranking, John Calipari feigned disappointment.
"We're not No. 1? I'm mad!" he said at the Kentucky Coal Association luncheon.
"It's fine," he said. "Our fans have fun with it. At the end of the day, we want to be No. 1 at the end of the year."
Cal went on to tell the coal owners and operators that the December 3 matchup with North Carolina should be fun.
"They have everybody coming back," he said.
Cal predicted fans will love this year's version of the Cats.
"This is the kind of team we should have fun with, because they get along, they like each other and they play hard."
He said his job is made easier because this team is talented.
"I'm not coaching emotion. I'm not coaching intensity. I'm not coaching effort. I'm coaching basketball, so you can really do alot."
