Could John Wall, Eric Bledsoe and DeMarcus Cousins soon be coming to a Rupp Arena near you?
If John Calipari and the Dominican Republic national team have anything to do with it... yes.
Sources tell 27 SportsFirst that Cal, along with Dominican organizers and a national management group, are in discussions with Rupp Arena to bring an exhibition game to Lexington. A tentative date has been set for August 15.
Sources say there still are many hoops to jump through before this game is finalized.
As part of the agreement between Cal and the Dominicans, players will come to Lexington to train at UK's Joe Craft Center, before heading off to Argentina for the Tournament of the Americas, an Olympic qualifying tournament. Cal said he expects current NBA players Francisco Garcia, Al Horford, Charlie Villanueva and Trevor Ariza to play for the DR.
The NBA lockout leaves its players in limbo, so Calipari is hoping guys like Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe and Boston's Rajon Rondo will agree to play in the exhibition game. Former UK coach Joe B. Hall has been contacted about coaching the group of Cats.
A couple of weeks ago, former Wildcat Josh Harrellson told 27 SportsFirst he'd be interested in playing against the Dominicans.
In addition to the game against former Wildcats, Calipari has said that he hoped to schedule another exhibition game, possibly against another country, for his Dominican team.
WIth no end to the NBA lockout in sight, here's hoping an agreement can be reached. How cool would it be to see these guys back out on the Rupp Arena floor?
