Posted: 3:26 PM Trevard Lindley is quietly becoming one of UK's most celebrated athletes in ages. The Hiram, Georgia native has picked up yet another preseason "watch list" mention, as well as several more All-American considerations.
Posted: 11:37 PM I was cleaning out a closet here in the WKYT sports office and ran across a yellowing Herald-Leader sports section, the headline screaming, "Master, Turpin spur a Wildcat rout." The date was November 17, 1983 and UK had just whipped Louisville, 65-44. Quickly, I flashed onto this year's Dream Game matchup between the Cats and the Cards, one I've got circled on my calender as "must see." I've heard many say this season's game between UK and U of L might be one of the most anticipated in the rivalry's history.
Updated: 5:13 PM John Calipari apparently is a fan of the NFL. Specifically, he's a fan of his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers. That's why on Thursday, the UK coach is expected to visit the Steelers at their Latrobe, Pa. training camp.
Updated: 8:29 PM When he took over for Billy Gillispie as UK's basketball coach, John Calipari made the comment the Wildcat roster more resembled Rich Brook's squad, noting 20 players "looked like a football team." Calipari promised he wouldn't keep six walk-ons, as his predecessor did. On Thursday, 27 SportsFirst learned that three more walk-ons would be leaving the UK team, leaving only Mark Krebs as the only non-scholarship Wildcat.
Posted: 8:09 PM Boxing aficionados will recognize the name Jack Johnson. The Texan became the first black heavyweight champion of the world, albeit, in 1908, when news traveled about as quickly as a snail. Unfortunately, Johnson became a fallen figure after being imprisoned in 1913.
Updated: 2:50 PM As was mentioned in the previous post, former Wildcat and Lafayette product Michael Bertram is having his finest year as a minor leaguer. Playing with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, Detroit's A team, Bertram had raised his batting average to .283 and was leading the team in RBI (47). The hope was that Detroit would move Bertram up in the farm system. That phone call came over the weekend.
Updated: 3:58 PM Former Wildcat Michael Bertram is realizing his boyhood dream -- playing baseball for a living. This past weekend, the Lafayette product enjoyed one of his finest days as a pro.
Posted: 8:04 PM I'll give the man credit. I think John Calipari could sell ice to Siberians. UK's coach is putting college basketball on notice: the Wildcats are back and in a big way.
Posted: 11:56 AM UK student Billy Kopp failed to make it to the final table at the World Series of Poker's World Championship. But don't cry for the Patrolman. He pockets nearly $1 million for his efforts.
Updated: 11:09 PM Fans of poker will recognize the World Series of Poker's World Championship as the Super Bowl for card sharks. With nearly 6,500 entrants, each paying $10,000 to get a seat, the total prize money for the main event approaches $64 million. So it's with great surprise that at last check, UK student Billy Kopp leads all players with 21,200,000 chips.
Posted: 3:46 PM The chat sites and the message boards exploded over the weekend, word spreading like wildfire of an altercation near campus, possibly involving UK athletes. Local radio talk shows have been filled with callers wanting to add their two cents. We may never know if those rumors were true because there is no police report and now it appears there won't be any arrests made.
Updated: 2:52 PM The NFL's supplemental draft is next week, so former Wildcat defensive end Jeremy Jarmon conducted his final workout on Thursday, in front of several NFL scouts and front office personnel.
Updated: 9:57 AM Kenny Perry attended Western Kentucky, gives generously to Lipscomb, but has an affinity for UK basketball.
Updated: 8:57 PM John Calipari's first recruiting class is on campus and some of my friends at UK say the pick-up games this summer have been, shall we say, interesting.
Updated: 7:57 PM In case you missed it, and I'm certain 99 percent of Americans did, two of the best thoroughbreds in history raced over the weekend. And won. Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta are two of the best ever to break from a starting gate. Unless you were tuned to TVG or HRTV, you had little chance to see the two most-talented horses currently racing.
Updated: 8:16 PM UK coach John Calipari said he didn't anticipate adding another player to next year's Wildcat roster. Calipari made the comments on Saturday morning, moments after participating in the UK women's basketball's "5K for 5 K" run. Calipari was the race starter.
Updated: 3:46 PM There has been discussion on various chat sites and message boards about whether Jodie Meeks can return to UK, should he go undrafted on June 25. Wildcat fans will recall big man Randolph Morris entered the NBA Draft, but returned after not hearing his name called on draft night. Of course, Morris had to sit out 14 games for his flirtation with the NBA. The question remains: can Meeks return to play for John Calipari if he's not drafted?
Updated: 8:38 AM After waiting weeks to hear from UK guard Jodie Meeks about his draft status, Wildcat fans got the word on Monday that the Norcross, Ga. native has opted to remain in the NBA Draft. It's a decision that's drawing mixed reviews.
Posted: 7:47 PM Former UK guard Landon Slone has a new basketball address: Morehead State. The freshman from Paintsville transferred after UK's new coaching staff promised to limit the number of walk-ons on next year's Wildcat roster. Slone saw the writing on the wall and began his search for a new home.
Updated: 12:57 PM If there's one thing Landon Slone loves, it's being a Kentucky Wildcat. It was his dream of wearing the blue and white that led the Paintsville native to walk-on at UK, turning down scholarship offers to other schools.
Updated: 1:09 PM UK coach John Calipari has been on the job less than two months, but already, he and his Wildcat basketball program are the talk of college basketball. Saying he was hired to replace Billy Gillispie "because I can recruit the best," Calipari has done just that.
Posted: 1:09 AM UK defensive end Jeremy Jarmon is now a "former" UK defensive end, thanks to the NCAA's recent ruling that the junior is ineligible, testing positive for a banned substance. While admitting he ultimately was responsible, it's a sad ending to a stellar career for one of UK's most charismatic players.
Updated: 7:16 PM UK coach John Calipari has said for weeks that he has begun the process of determining which players would stay and who would be leaving, in order to trim his roster and accommodate the nation's top-rated recruiting class.
Updated: 4:59 PM When he was introduced as the just the seventh coach since 1930, John Calipari promised the Big Blue Nation and his bosses that he knew of the challenges he faced. As if to prove his point, Coach Cal seemingly embarked on a one-man crusade, a nationwide campaign to re-energize the Wildcat program.
