Midway College Receives Funding from Senator Jim Bunning

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway College is pleased to announce it has received $100,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds were made available thanks to the efforts of United States Senator Jim Bunning to help Midway College expand its nursing program.

"The funds awarded from Senator Bunning will help Midway College double the size of our Associate Degree in Nursing program to graduate more nurses by 2012," said Dr. William B. Drake, Jr. President of Midway College.

Midway College operates an accelerated, 18-month program that is considered one of the most efficient in the region. Funds will provide equipment and help renovate laboratories to accommodate the growing student body at Midway College.

"As the region looks to meet its own nursing demands, the Midway College Nursing and Health Science Center strives to be a center of education, meeting the needs of health professionals in the region and nation," said Dr. Barbara Kitchen, Nursing Division Chair, Midway College.

"As Kentucky's population continues to grow older it will be important that the Commonwealth continues to have well trained and dedicated nurses," said Senator Bunning. "The good people at Midway College are leading the way in the education of future nurses. These federal funds will double the number of graduating nurses from Midway College by 2012. It is an honor to secure these funds so that Midway College can expand its nursing program and provide quality nurses for the Commonwealth."

This past summer Dr. William B. Drake, Jr attended the Bluegrass Region's Annual Washington, D.C. Fly-In, organized by Commerce Lexington for two days of meetings with Kentucky's Congressional Delegation and staffs discussing the priority projects for the Bluegrass Region. The priorities represented projects throughout Central Kentucky including expanding the nursing program at Midway College.
