Reporter

Born and raised in Kentucky, Tanner Hesterberg serves as a general assignment reporter and weekend evening anchor at WKYT.

Tanner started working at WKYT in January 2017 after a four-and-a-half year stint at WYMT, WKYT’s sister station in Eastern Kentucky. While at WYMT, Tanner filled a variety of roles, including anchoring Mountain News at 11 every weeknight and reporting in the field. He also served as lead play-by-play voice for WYMT’s “Game of the Week” football and basketball broadcasts – a job he still holds on a part-time basis. Tanner is also the host of Sports 101, a weekly radio call-in show on WSGS 101.1 FM.

Prior to his graduation from Morehead State University in 2012, Tanner spent two seasons calling Rowan County High School basketball games as the “Voice of the Vikings.” One of his most cherished memories is calling Rowan County’s run to the 2011 Sweet 16 state championship game. During college, Tanner also worked in the newsroom at Morehead State Public Radio and served as sports editor at The Trail Blazer, MSU’s student newspaper.

He graduated from Lakeside Christian Academy in Morehead, Ky. At Lakeside, Tanner was a member of the 2008 Falcons baseball team that won the Kentucky Christian Athletic Association state championship. In high school, he also participated in the Governor’s Scholars Program.

Tanner’s career as a journalist includes several honors from the Associated Press, including first-place awards for Enterprise/Investigative Reporting and Political Coverage. He also won the AP’s award for Best Sports Play-By-Play in 2015 and 2016.

Tanner is an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals. He loves the Louisville/Kentucky basketball rivalry and follows both teams, but cheers above all for Morehead State, his alma mater. He enjoys going back to the mountains to visit old friends and also spending time with his nephew, Braxton, and niece, Harper.
