Matthew Rand is an award-winning journalist. He joined the WKYT news team in July 2017 as a reporter.
Rand is a native of the greater Cincinnati area. He grew up in Georgetown, Ohio. Rand gained some of his first journalism experience in high school, working on the school newspaper.
Rand graduated from Morehead State University in May 2012. During his time at MSU, Rand worked for Morehead State Public Radio as an anchor, reporter, and board operator/host. His work there was recognized during the 2013 Kentucky Associated Press Broadcasters competition, where he won first place in the News Story – Radio category.
Rand’s first job after graduation was WYMT in Hazard, Kentucky. He wrote, shot, and edited stories daily. During a portion of his four-year tenure, Rand was also the anchor of Mountain News Weekend Edition. Rand was again recognized during the 2014 Kentucky AP Awards, winning first place for Best Political Coverage together with future WKYT colleague Tanner Hesterberg.
In August 2016, Rand joined the WLKY news team in Louisville, Kentucky as a reporter.
Off the clock, Rand enjoys good food, spending time with good friends, camping, riding his bike, binging TV shows, brushing up on political news, and hanging out with his cats.
