Sheriff Derek Robbins says Kyle E. Smith, 23, of Danville surrendered in LaGrange, Georgia Wednesday. Robbins says authorities in LaGrange found the 1999 Mercury Villager Smith was driving burned in the woods, and a witness spotted the man leaving the vehicle.

Smith is accused of kidnapping a Perryville woman on the Danville Bypass just before 7 a.m. Tuesday. Robbins says it happened after the woman dropped her kids off at the Christ the Head Missionary Church day care when Smith assaulted her and dragged her into a van.

"It was very shocking," says daycare director Rita Hawkins, "When anything like that happens to me it’s very shocking. It’s just hard to believe that people are that cruel."

The victim was able to escape the van while it was moving, but she was hurt as a result of an altercation. She was transferred to a hospital following the escape.

Authorities say this is not the first time Smith has threatened the victim.

"They’ve been in a relationship in the past. There are EPO and DPo paperwork between them where he’s made threats.," says Robbins, "She's definitely scared of this guy."

Robbins says Smith will likely be brought back to Boyle County next week to face charges.
