LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's been a cloudy and much colder start to the weekend as highs only climbed into the mid-upper 30's. As we head into the next 24 hours, rain and snow chances return to the forecast as a pair of systems take aim at the Commonwealth.
Tonight, look for cloud cover to sit tight as a pair of systems roll through the Commonwealth. The first system is situated well to our south but is making it's move as you read this. In fact, this system will throw a slug of moisture our way late tonight and into early Sunday morning. Considering the timing of this happening and temperatures dropping into the low 30's, light snow is expected to break out.
As this first system progresses north and eastward, the low will pull some warmer air with it. In return, look for temperatures Sunday morning to hit the mid-upper 30's. As this happens, any spots south of I-64 with light snow/mix falling, a transition to a cold rain occurs. But the further north you reside, the better chance for seeing light snow longer. This zone lies along Interstate 64 and north. The good news is, this system is off to our east by early afternoon as most briefly dry out.
Now, as far as snow amounts are concerned, most are in the running for some light stuff. A good chunk of central and eastern Kentucky will see a coating - 2" with the higher amounts along 64 and north. The further south and west you reside, the better chances for seeing more rain and less snow. In return, a coating - 1" remains possible for these areas. Grassy areas and elevated surfaces stand the best chance for these slushy accumulations as ground temps will be around or just above freezing.
System number two dives in later Sunday night while bringing colder air and more snow chances. This is expected to be light but could put down another coating - 1" in spots. A few early flakes fly Monday before conditions dry out.
The week ahead looks fairly active. More rain and snow chances look possible Tuesday and Wednesday with another late-week system that could be messy. Overall, temperatures are cold with highs in the 30's and 40's.
