Officials say the fire and smoke damage was mostly contained to the interior of the original shelter building.
All of the animals were removed from the facility safely thanks to the quick actions of staff and volunteers. A couple of dogs are being monitored for smoke inhalation, but they are expected to recover within a few days.
The facility is asking for both supplies and monetary donations. They specifically need bleach, liquid laundry detergent, towels and blankets right now.
Donations can be dropped off at the shelter itself, located at 5000 Ironworks Road in Winchester. Other drop-off locations include Advanced Turf Equipment, The Williams Agency Insurance Office, and Community Trust Bank of Winchester during their regular business hours.
