Coroner identifies 19-year-old man found dead in downtown Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington police are investigating what led to a man's death Wednesday morning.

Police say they were called out just before 4 a.m. to help paramedics. A man with an apparent gunshot wound was found behind an apartment on East Sixth Street near Shropshire Avenue.

Officials with the Fayette County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Mikel Willis, 19. Willis died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police are talking to neighbors as they continue to figure out what led up to the shooting.

Logan Avritt is the founder of MADE - an organization which works with youth in Fayette County to prevent violence. Avritt said he mentored Willis through his program.

"He had been with me since the 7th grade. That's a young man that I watched mature and grow and do his best to make it out. He fought," Avritt said.

We learned Willis recently graduated and was planning on serving in the Army.

Avritt said the community must continue to try to build teens up and make sure they know there is more out there for them than violence.

"To my young men and women, value your life. Focus on your goals. Stay motivated. Don't give up because when you give up that's when you accept anything. We don't want to accept death no more. It's too easy and too early," he said.
