PARIS, Ky. (WKYT) - One person and a horse were killed in a Friday morning crash in Bourbon County.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. near the Bourbon-Fayette County line.

The Bourbon County Coroner identified the driver as 80-year-old Donald Ray Smith of Carlisle. The coroner said Smith was a contract worker for the United States Postal Service. He was in route to Lexington to pick up his mail when the crash happened.

The horse involved in the crash was also killed. Investigators said at least two horses escaped from the nearby farm, Red Gables shortly before the crash.

Tanya Johnson, the owner of the farm, believes the horses must've been spooked by something which caused them to break through a fence and escape.

"You care about these horses. You take care of them from the day their born and of course you get attached and love them, but you also are very realistic that it is a business. Human lives are far more important than their lives. It's just the way it is," Johnson said.
