Heater caused fire that destroyed several units at Georgetown storage center

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) - Firefighters believe a heater caused a fire at a storage center in Scott County. The fire happened at 6:30 Friday morning at JLS Mini Storage on Maple Grove Road in Georgetown.

Someone knocked on the door of the fire station, which sits across the street from the building, and notified them of the fire. Firefighters arrived to find large flames shooting from the facility.

Investigators say a man was injured when a heater he was using in his storage unit exploded. Emergency crews took him to the hospital with burns.

The fire destroyed many belongings. Bill Bryant, known to many as Blue Grass Santa, says his unit was one of the many the fire destroyed.

"I get up here and it is definitely our unit. It has my Santa Claus sleigh in it which is bad, but the worst part is it's full of toys for underprivileged kids that I give out throughout the year. So, it's going to be a total loss. It's kind of disappointing," Bryant said.

Bryant hopes to start building his collection of toys again; many were donations. There is an online donation drive to help provide donations to get his mission back up and running.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be accidental.
