MCKEE, Ky. (WKYT) - Friends and family will gather Thursday afternoon to remember the life of a 5-year-old boy, murdered nearly two weeks ago.

Search crews discovered the body of James Spoonamore, 5, on the morning of Monday, September 11, about 180-feet off Sparks Ridge Road in Jackson County.

Police charged Lonnie Belt with his murder, as well as the attempted murder of Spoonamore's mother, Jessica Durham.

According to an arrest citation, Belt admitted to taking Durham and her son against their will to a secluded wooded area.

Police say Belt assaulted the mother and pushed her off a cliff, leaving her with significant injuries.

The citation goes on to say that Belt then admitted to the taking the boy to a separate area where he struck the five-year-old in the head multiple times with a metal object.

The funeral for James will begin at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Lakes Funeral Home in McKee.

Belt is set to appear in court again Monday.
